Spikers rally past Newman

The Mendota Spikers picked up a hard-fought 25-23, 25-23 win over Newman in Three Rivers Conference volleyball action on Oct. 8 at Sterling.

Mendota trailed 11-3 in the first set but clawed its way back to overcome the Comets and get the victory.

Laylie Denault supplied nine kills and Ella Martin jump-started the offense with 11 assists, while Ava Eddy contributed 14 digs, Elaina Reddin had three blocks and Zariah Escatel recorded three ace serves.

The Spikers gained one win in five matches at the Princeton Tournament on Oct. 12. The home Tigresses claimed the tournament title.

Statistical leaders for Mendota on the day were Eddy (34 digs), Denault (33 kills), Martin (35 assists), Reddin (seven blocks) and Escatel (12 ace serves).

“We were competitive and serving was big for us,” said Mendota coach Demi Salazar. “This was a nice turnaround from last week.”

Denault was named to the all-tournament team.

Mendota’s season records are 6-18 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
