LaSALLE – The Mendota varsity golf team advanced to the sectional round after finishing in third place in the LaSalle-Peru Class 2A Regional Golf Tournament on Oct. 2 at Senica’s Oak Ridge in LaSalle.

The top three teams earn automatic bids to the sectional and Mendota’s 328 score was good enough to move on. Ottawa claimed the regional championship with a 300, one stroke less than Burlington Central. The rest of the schools in the regional included Kaneland (336), Sandwich (340), LaSalle-Peru (341), Sycamore (344), Genoa-Kingston (350) and Plano (383).

“The guys played great today,” said Mendota coach David Ross. “They managed very well to minimize their mistakes and were rewarded by continuing their season.”

Brody Hartt carded the low score for the Trojans with a 78, which tied him for eighth place overall. Next in for Mendota was Dane Doyle with an 82, followed by Grady Jones and Jonas Fitzgerald both with 84s. Evan McPheeters (87) and Alex Holland (103) completed the Mendota lineup card.

“I am very proud of these guys for what they were able to do,” added Ross. “We had a good game plan and they executed the way that we wanted to. We knew that 330 would keep us in contention and they came out and shot 328 and got the job done.”

Chandler Creedon of Ottawa was the individual medalist with a 72. The rest of the top five finishers included Tyler Samaan of Burlington Central (73), Matthew Zierk of Burlington Central (74), Colt Bryson of Ottawa (75) and Bryer Harris of Ottawa (75).
