MAPLE PARK – The Mendota High School golf season came to an end at the Maple Park Kaneland Class 2A Sectional on Oct. 7. The Trojans finished 11th in the team standings with a score of 348 and also did not have an individual state qualifier.

“The boys battled and kept their heads up even when they knew they wouldn’t advance,” said Mendota coach David Ross. “Dane (Doyle) had a good chance to advance, but came up short on the last couple holes. The cut for individuals ended up being 79.

“Still, we have advanced as a team now out of the regional two out of the last three years so that is great progress for the program. We also have a bunch of juniors coming back next year to take another shot at it so hopefully they will be motivated to take the next step. Overall, very proud of the boys and the season that they had.”

Doyle carded the low score for the Trojans with an 84. Jonas Fitzgerald had the second lowest score for Mendota with an 86, while Grady Jones shot an 87. The rest of the Trojan lineup consisted of Brody Hartt (91), Evan McPheeters (95) and Alex Holland (99).

Ottawa claimed the sectional team championship with a 311. The other state qualifying team was Rockford Boylan with a 317. Other schools participating were Geneseo (322), Crystal Lake Prairie Ridge (323), Mundelein Carmel (329), Byron (331), Dixon (334), Grayslake Central (338), Belvidere North (340) and Freeport (367).
