MENDOTA – When contestants of the Mendota Sweet Corn Pageant are getting ready for the annual event, they are usually waiting for the summer to get over so they can go to college or are working shifts around their pageant schedule.

BLOOMINGTON – Illinois High School Association (IHSA) member schools approved 12 of 14 amendment proposals that appeared on the all-school ballot during the annual by-law referendum process that ended on Dec. 19, 2023.

ROCK FALLS – Mendota’s sophomore boys’ basketball team took an early lead and maintained it throughout in posting a 55-46 triumph over Rock Falls in non-conference action on Dec. 21 at Rock Falls.

ROCK FALLS – Mendota and Rock Falls played a tight first half before the Rockets pulled away in the second half to notch a 70-54 victory over the Trojans in a varsity boys’ basketball non-conference battle on Dec. 21 at Rock Falls.

The Mendota Trojan wrestlers took down Hall/Putnam County and lost to Orion in a triangular meet at Orion on Dec. 19.

Mendota and Hall both had the three-ball working, but one more for the Trojans than the Red Devils proved to be the difference in a 52-49 Mendota victory in a varsity boys’ basketball Three Rivers Conference contest on Dec. 12 at the MHS gym.

Mendota struggled in a loss to LaSalle-Peru and captured a come-from-behind victory over Earlville in varsity girls’ basketball action last week to make its record 3-9 on the season.

PLANO – The Mendota Trojans will participate in the 60th annual Plano Varsity Christmas Classic on Dec. 27-30.

The Mendota sophomore boys’ basketball team split a pair of games last week, winning a tight Three Rivers Conference contest over Hall and dropping a nonconference decision to Sycamore.

STILLMAN VALLEY – Mendota wrestlers competed in the Stillman Valley Invitational on Dec. 16.

AMBOY – The Mendota girls’ basketball teams will compete in the Amboy Holiday Tournament set for Dec. 26-29.

SPRING VALLEY – Mendota ended with a 2-2 record and a fourth-place finish in the 12-team Hall Colmone Classic held Dec. 2-9 at Spring Valley.

Mendota dug itself a first-quarter hole that it couldn’t climb out of in absorbing a 54-24 setback to Princeton in a Three Rivers Conference girls’ varsity basketball contest on Dec. 7 at Princeton.

The Mendota wrestling team posted a 1-1 record in a triangular meet against West Carroll and Rockridge on Dec. 7 at Edgington.

MENDOTA – Mendota is still looking for its first conference win after Sterling Newman took out the Lady Trojans, 59-23, in a Three Rivers Conference matchup on Dec. 11 at the MHS gym.

SPRING VALLEY – The Mendota sophomore boys’ basketball team claimed a 62-28 victory over Hall in its final game of the Colmone Classic on Dec. 7 at Spring Valley.

SPRINGFIELD – Hunters in Illinois took a preliminary total of 76,232 deer during the seven-day 2023 Illinois firearm deer season that concluded Dec. 3.
