MENDOTA – Mendota is still looking for its first conference win after Sterling Newman took out the Lady Trojans, 59-23, in a Three Rivers Conference matchup on Dec. 11 at the MHS gym.

Newman took control in the first quarter, sprinting out to a 14-5 lead after the eight-minute session. The Lady Comets really heated up in the second period when they pumped in 22 points compared to six for Mendota to take a 36-11 advantage to intermission.

“Our defense was way better than the score,” said Mendota coach John Hansen. “This was our sloppiest unforced turnover night all year.

“Newman shot well and played scrappy. That let us get too excited with the ball.”

Crystal Garcia and Laylie Denault connected for six points apiece to top the Mendota scoring chart. Garcia, Grace Wasmer and Ella Coss led the team with five rebounds apiece, while Denault picked up five steaks and Garcia had four.

Mendota fell to 2-8 overall and 0-4 in league play.
