Trojans upend three soccer foes

Mendota and Stillman Valley battled it out in a varsity soccer game and the Trojans eked out 2-1 victory on Sept. 18 at Stillman Valley.

After a scoreless first half, the Trojans broke the tie when Yahir Diaz took a pass from Jack Massey and drilled home a goal at the 47:08 mark.

Mendota made it 2-0 as Emiliano Arteaga scored at 53:42 off an assist from Eddie Perez.

Stillman Valley tallied its only goal at 63:37.

Joel Figueroa was the goaltender for Mendota.

The Trojans absorbed a rare defeat, 3-1, to Earlville-Leland-Paw Paw on Sept. 20 at Earlville.

Diaz scored Mendota’s only goal.

Mendota got back on the winning track with a 4-1 triumph over Ottawa on Sept. 22 at the MHS field.

Perez got things started for the Trojans with a penalty kick goal at 27:55. The game remained 1-0 at intermission.

Ottawa tied the game just over 10 minutes into the second half, but Mendota scored the final three goals to claim the victory. Perez broke the tie at the 63:18 mark, then Emiliano Arteaga and Josue Arteaga tacked on two more goals. Diaz had an assist.

Joel Figueroa was between the pipes for the Trojans.

Mendota had little trouble in disposing of Plano, 6-1, on Sept. 24 at Plano.

The Trojans, who led 2-0 at halftime, got three goals from Diaz. Also getting in on the scoring were Joel Escatel, Emiliano Arteaga and Ivan Figueroa.

Massey picked up a pair of assists, while Perez and Emiliano Arteaga also recorded assists.

Joel Figueroa was Mendota’s goaltender.
