District 280 Board moving forward on buildings & grounds maintenance projects

MENDOTA – The Mendota High School District 280 Board of Education moved forward on several buildings and grounds maintenance projects at its April 15 regular meeting.

BOARD REPORTS

The Nutrition and Culinary Arts class created a charcuterie board that was presented at the board meeting. Several students came after school with Ms. Sallee to design the board. They included Kaleb Bodie, Adrianna Johnson, Laina Gonzales, Roxana Ramirez, and Brenna Rummery.

The Cafeteria Report was presented, and the option for a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) was discussed. At this time, the initial review of the CEP program is that District 280 technically qualifies. However, the lunch reimbursement would not be in the best financial interest of the district to move to CEP away from the traditional reimbursement program currently in the National School Lunch Program.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Principal Joe Masini informed the board that an eighth grade orientation visit will be Wednesday, May 8.

He also updated the board on the digital testing and PSAT and ISA.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

During Superintendent Denise Aughenbaugh’s report, the board discussed the stadium parking lot project. ENGIE will review the current amended project to see if additional cost savings can be gathered.

The board reviewed all and accepted the bid from Provantage Paving, Inc. with the lowest bid of $21,745 to clean, seal, and stripe the front parking lot, road to the auditorium, and small parking area between the vocational and the main building. This work will be completed in June.

The A.L.O.P. ROE #35 Program opportunity was discussed and the board approved it for school year 2024-2025. The ALOP program stands for Alternative Learning Opportunity Program. It is in the school code as a means to provide additional student support. The goal is to serve students so they graduate, and it serves students in grades 4-12. Identification criteria includes SEL (Social Emotional Learning), Academics, Attendance/Truancy, and Behavior Issues. Parental consent is required to participate. One to two full-time ROE employees will be at the high school as an advocate/mentor to work with the district identified students. The mentor holds experience and a substitute teaching license. The district will provide a space (classroom/office) and the district’s portion of required program funding. ROE #35 is the fiscal agent and employer.

The athletic complex dedication ceremony date and time will be announced for a June date. Signage was approved at the board meeting.

The Superintendent’s Report also included an overview of the Quarter 3 goals and completion.

The next regular meeting of the District 280 Board of Education will be Monday, May 20 at 6 p.m.
