Trojans notch league win over Byron

The struggles continued on the diamond for the Mendota Trojans as they dropped a 9-3 decision to Dixon in a Big Northern Conference battle on April 17 at Faber Field in Mendota.

A five-run third inning helped Dixon build a big lead, while the Trojans’ bats were silenced again as they went scoreless for six innings before scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh.

Mendota ended with just four hits. Austin Robinson had an RBI double and John Buchanan drove in a run with a single.

The Dukes collected nine hits against two Trojan pitchers. Sam Becker worked into the fifth and took the loss. He gave up seven hits, seven runs, walked three and struck out two. Gavin Glazebrook finished up on the hill.

The Trojans got a much-needed 8-2 win over Byron in BNC action on April 19 at the MHS diamond.

Bryson Prusator helped get Mendota back on the winning track when he pitched a complete-game five-hitter. The senior righty struck out 10 and did not issue a free pass.

The Trojans plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, knocking out four hits, including an RBI double by Robinson.

Mendota added two runs in the third, then Byron finally got on the board in the top of fourth when it recorded four consecutive hits in a two-out, two-run rally.

But the Trojans widened the gap with a four-run bottom of the fifth thanks to five walks, two wild pitches and only one base hit, a two-run single by Robinson, who went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs.

Kiandre Morris added three singles in four at-bats and drove in a run for Mendota, which totaled 10 safeties in the contest. John Buchanan contributed a pair of singles for the Trojans.

Byron turned the tables and squeaked out a 5-4 triumph over the Trojans on April 23 at Byron.

With the scored tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Byron loaded the bases with two outs. A Trojan error allowed the winning run to score.

Mendota held leads of 1-0 and 3-2, but Byron responded both times, holding a 4-3 advantage entering the sixth when the Trojans pushed across a run to tie.

Mendota (9-8, 7-6) rapped out nine hits, led by Becker with two singles and a triple. Joel Escatel had a pair of doubles, Prusator singled and doubled, and Buchanan had a two-bagger.

Becker pitched six innings and allowed eight hits, four runs, walked two and fanned seven. Buchanan relieved in the seventh and took the loss. He walked the bases loaded before Byron won on the error.
