Trojans manage just one win in Colmone Classic

SPRING VALLEY – The Mendota Trojans started off play in the Hall Colmone Classic with a 48-31 loss to Ottawa Marquette on Dec. 12.

Marquette doubled the score on the Trojans, 10-5, after the opening stanza, and continued to build on the lead. The count was 24-12 at halftime and 37-17 after three periods.

The Trojans placed just one player in double-figure scoring – Blake Stamberger with 11 points. Preston O’Sadnick led with five rebounds, while Bryson Prusator dished out three assists.

Mendota connected on just 23 percent of its field goal attempts and 50 percent of its free throws. Marquette shot 40 percent from the floor and 79 percent from the stripe. The Crusaders held a 26-24 edge on the glass. The Trojans committed 17 turnovers, two more than Marquette.

The Trojans were blitzed in the second quarter by Bureau Valley and went down to a 70-40 defeat in the second round of the tournament on Dec. 13.

Mendota was down 15-11 after the opening eight minutes, but Bureau Valley pumped in 26 second-quarter points compared to just 13 for the Trojans.

Prusator led the scoring chart for the Trojans with 11 points, while Ben Bokus added 10. Stamberger handled 14 rebounds and Bokus had four assists.

The Trojans shot 39 percent from the field, 13 percent from the line and had 22 rebounds, while Bureau Valley hit 42 percent from the floor, 82 percent from the stripe and had 33 boards. Mendota had 24 turnovers compared to 14 for the Storm.

Another miserable second quarter doomed the Trojans in a 51-38 loss to Plano in the third round on Dec. 14.

The Reapers held a 9-5 advantage after the first quarter, but stretched the lead to 24-13 at intermission and 39-19 after three.

Kaine Pizano-Olson paced the Trojan offense with 16 points, while Bokus and Stamberger had eight tallies apiece. Stamberger led with six caroms.

Mendota shot a chilly 28 percent from the floor and made 63 percent of its free tosses. Plano hit at a 35 percent clip from the field and 75 percent from the line. The Reapers dominated the boards, 42-21, and committed 17 turnovers, two more than Mendota.

Mendota closed out the tournament with a 73-59 win over Kewanee in the 11th-place game on Dec. 16.

The Trojans zoomed out to a 25-9 first-quarter lead and never looked back. The count was 46-27 at the break.

Three Trojans hit double digits in scoring, led by Stamberger with 18 points, followed by Bokus and Pizano-Olson with 14 apiece. Stamberger was also tops in rebounds with 12.

Mendota (4-7) hit 47 percent of its field goal attempts and 56 percent of its free tosses, while Kewanee was a frigid 33 percent from the floor and 53 percent from the line. The Trojans held a huge 45-22 advantage on the glass and committed 18 turnovers, five more than Kewanee.

Bureau Valley won the Colmone Classic by defeating Rock Falls in the championship game. Princeton finished third, followed by Pontiac, Fieldcrest, St. Bede, Hall, Marquette, Plano and Wilmington.
