Trojan golfers enjoy success

Mendota went up against last year’s Big Northern Conference co-champion Rock Falls and lost by only three strokes, 166-169, in varsity golf competition on Aug. 14 at Rock Falls.

All six Trojans golfers shot in the 40s, led by Taylor Joyce, Austin Robinson and Zeke Hessenberger all with 42s. Ethan Hanaman checked in with a 43, followed by Jack Beetz with a 44 and Colton Scheppers at 49.

Grant Wasson of Rock Falls was the medalist with a 37.

Mendota’s junior varsity team totaled a 218 and fell to Rock Falls, which finished with a 203.

Competing for the Trojans were Shea Doughty (51), Luke Ross (52), Noah DeLong (55), Lane Howard (60), Tristan Joyce (63) and Kevin Lewis (64).

In freshman-sophomore action, each team shot a 202, but Mendota claimed the match by having a lower fifth score.

The Mendota lineup consisted of Logan Brandner (48), Liam McGann (50), Aaron Reddin (51), Kody Becket (53), Gabe Arteaga (67) and Oden Shaw (87).

The Mendota varsity squad dominated play in a triangular victory over Seneca and Hall on Aug. 20 at Nettle Creek Country Club in Morris. The Trojans carded a 174 to easily outdistance second-place Seneca (198) and Hall (202).

Hanaman, a freshman, had the low score among all golfers with a 40 to earn meet medalist honors. Checking in next for the Trojans was Taylor Joyce with a 43, followed by Robinson with a 45 and Hessenberger with a 46. Scheppers (50) and Beetz (59) completed the lineup.

Mendota also claimed the junior varsity competition with a 221. Seneca shot a 227 and Hall had a 245.

Doughty and Tristan Joyce tied for the low score among Trojan competitors with 51s. Other players were McGann (58), DeLong (61), Ross (64) and Howard (66).
