Season ends at regional level for Mendota cross country teams

SENECA – The Mendota boys’ and girls’ cross country teams had their season come to an end in the Seneca Class 1A Regional on Oct. 26.

The boys missed out on a trip to the sectional by one place in the team standings. The top six teams move on, but the Trojans placed seventh with 214 points. The advancing teams were Aurora Central Catholic (30), Amboy-LaMoille (77), St. Bede (97), Princeton (138), Hall (149) and Henry-Senachwine (180).

Andrew Stamberger was the first Mendota runner to cross the finish line and 40th overall with a time of 20:10.23. Trent Stamberger was next in 52nd place at 20:38.55, followed by Ty Connelly in 55th place with time of 21:00.33 and Alex Hermosillo in 59th place at 21:37.18. Sam Lawrence (61st, 21:57.81), Nevin Fouke (66th, 22:53.08) and Liam Indigo (71st, 25:30.92) completed the Trojan lineup.

Lucas Hoffman of Ottawa Marquette grabbed the individual championship with a clocking of 17:10.72.

Two runners competed for the Lady Trojans. Jamie Dooley was 48th in 26:22.30 and Lily Linden finished 50th in 26:32.23.

Lianna Surtz of Aurora Rosary claimed the individual championship with a time of 18:04.65.

The top six teams advancing to the sectional were Aurora Rosary (22), Aurora Central Catholic (56), Seneca (87), Amboy-LaMoille (67), Princeton (120) and Elgin St. Edward (132).

The sectional for the boys and girls will be contested at the Oregon Park West course in Oregon on Saturday, Nov. 2. The girls will race at 10 a.m. followed by the boys at 11 a.m.
