Mendota bounced back from a sluggish start to hand Putnam County a 43-33 setback in varsity girls’ basketball play on Dec. 3 at Granville.

The Lady Trojans found themselves on the short end of an 8-4 score after the first eight-minute session, but they recovered enough to take an 18-17 lead to halftime. Mendota really revved things up in the third period and outscored Putnam County, 18-7, to take control.

“Not our prettiest game, but we used a 16-0 run to pull out the win,” said Mendota coach John Hansen. “We’ll take the win and hope we learned something from it.”

Amellia Bromenschenkel sparked the third-quarter uprising for Mendota when she scored 13 of her 23 points. Anna Bokus and Jaelyn Fitzgerald both chipped in with six markers. Bromenschenkel also paced the squad with 12 rebounds and five steals, while Jenna O’Donnell and Izabella Nanez had three assists apiece.

A second-half surge carried Mendota to a 47-37 triumph over Rockford Lutheran in the Big Northern Conference season-opener on Dec. 6 at Rockford.

Mendota doubled the score on Lutheran after one, 14-7, but the home team turned the table on the Lady Trojans in the second quarter and the game was tied at 21-all at intermission. Mendota regrouped at halftime and outscored the Crusaders, 18-2, in the third period to secure the win.

Bromenschenkel had another huge third quarter as she drilled 13 of her 27 points. Teghan Tillman provided 10 points, while Bromenschenkel hauled down 13 rebounds and Bianca Espinoza handled six caroms.

Mendota put away a pesky Princeton club, 44-32, on Dec. 7 at the MHS gym. Mendota (8-3, 1-0) played the game without two starters who had previous commitments.

The Lady Trojans held a 14-13 first-quarter lead and were up 22-17 at the half before they moved the margin to double figures (35-24) at the end of three.

Bromenschenkel pumped in 26 points and Fitzgerald added eight to lead the scoring attack. Bromenschenkel also paced the team with 15 rebounds and O’Donnell had seven steals.
