MHS cross country runners have season end in regional

ROCK FALLS – The Mendota cross country runners had their season come to a close after competing in the Rock Falls Class 1A Regional on Oct. 21.

In the girls’ race, the Lady Trojans finished at the bottom of the 14-team standings with 335 points. Rock Falls easily claimed the regional championship with 32 points. The Lady Rockets will advance to the sectional along with Kewanee-Wethersfield (86), Amboy-LaMoille (88), Bureau Valley (96), Sterling Newman (142), Orion (184), Princeton (214) and Ridgewood (214).

Lily Linden was the first Mendota runner to cross the finish line in 56th place with a time of 24:29.07. Bonnie Hall was next in 66th place with a clocking of 25:32.52, while Gabrielle Brown was 68th in 25:44.27. Piper Artman (75th, 26:22.42) and Devin Wade (92nd, 30:30.19) also competed for Mendota.

Rock Falls had the top two runners in the meet and four of the top six. Bailee Fortney was the overall champion with a time 18:16.44.

Two Mendota runners competed in the boys’ race. Rigo Hermosillo finished in 58th place with a time of 19:23.99, while Ty Connelley was 76th in 20:35.38.

The overall champion was Dawson Smith of Rock Falls with a time of 15:43.41.

Sterling Newman captured the team title with 54 points. Other teams moving on to the sectional include Rock Falls (75), Erie-Prophetstown (108), Bureau Valley (116), Galva (132), Rockridge (169) and Sherrard (186).

The sectional will be held in Oregon on Saturday, Oct. 28. The girls will race at 10 a.m. followed by the boys at 11 a.m.
