Trojan harriers fall short of state berth

OREGON – The Mendota cross country team saw its season come to a close at the Oregon Class 1A Sectional on Oct. 30.

The Trojans placed 18th out of 21 teams with 409 points. The top six teams in the sectional advance to the state meet. They were Rockford Christian (49), Riverdale (66), Amboy (100), Sandwich (130), Sterling Newman (158) and Erie-Prophetstown (248).

Mendota’s first runner to finish was Anthony Kelson in 29th place with a time of 18:06.18. Next was Alex Hermosillon in 89th place at 19:32.96, while Dagen Setchell was 97th in 19:53. Rounding out the Trojan lineup were Andrew Stamberger (104th, 20:04.10) and Travis Mumm (149th, 23:55.16).

Brock Loftus of Amboy was the overall individual champion with a time of 16:19.30, followed by Tommy Murray of Riverdale (16:22) and Ethan Walsh of Rockford Christian (16:41).

The girls’ race was won by Grace Erb of Winnebago in a time of 19:28, leading her Winnebago squad to the sectional championship with a score of 26 points.

The other advancing girls’ teams after Winnebago were Seneca (123), Mercer County (136), Rock Falls (142), Rockford Christian (182) and Sherrard (194).
