Mendota finished second in a three-team varsity golf meet on Aug. 28 at Rochelle. The host Hubs took the top spot with a team total of 164, which was 10 strokes better than the Trojans. Amboy finished with a 187.

Grady Jones posted the low score for Mendota with a 41, which was one shot back of the medalist’s score from Rochelle. The rest of the Trojan lineup also ended up in the 40s, with Brody Hartt coming in at 43, Dane Doyle, Jonas Fitzgerald and Tayven Orozco all shooting 45s, and Evan McPheeters at 49.

Mendota went up against eight other teams in the L-P Invite on Aug. 29 at Senica’s Oak Ridge.

The Trojans placed fifth in the team standings with a 346. The top four teams were Ottawa (307), Rochelle (340), Hall (343) and Morris (345). Other schools in the event were Streator (348), Sycamore (353), L-P (361) and Serena (406).

Hartt turned in the low score for the Trojans with an 80, which put him in sixth place in the individual standings. Doyle shot an 86 for 15th place, while also competing for Mendota were Fitzgerald (88), Jones (92), McPheeters (98) and Novak (103).

“We were fifth overall and very easily could have been top three but just couldn’t finish it out,” said MHS coach David Ross. “Brody played really great golf all day today and then just hit a string of bogeys at the end. Overall, a good day - hopefully we are saving the low numbers for later in the season.”
