Spikers take out Newman in league battle

The Mendota Spikers opened up the Three Rivers Conference season with a 25-10, 25-8 loss to Hall on Sept. 3 at Spring Valley.

Laylie Denault recorded five kills, Ava Eddy had six digs, Ella Martin produced five assists, and Zariah Escatel totaled three points and two aces.

The Spikers bounced back with a hard-fought 25-23, 25-20 triumph over Sterling Newman on Sept. 5 at the MHS gym.

Denault led the attack with seven kills, while Martin jump-started the offense with 13 assists.

Mendota played five matches in two days in the Oregon Tournament on Sept. 6-7.

The Spikers dropped their first three matches to Lena-Winslow (25-12, 25-20), Stillman Valley (25-14, 25-21) and South Beloit (18-25, 25-20, 15-13).

Mendota posted its lone win of the tournament with a 25-9, 25-11 triumph over West Carroll. The Spikers wrapped up competition with a 25-13, 25-21 setback to Genoa-Kingston.

For the tournament, Denault had 37 kills, Martin picked up 62 assists and Eddy collected 46 digs.

Mendota and Sandwich went the limit with the Spikers prevailing, 25-27, 25-19, 25-20, on Sept. 9 at the MHS gym.

Denault and Reddin were forces at the net with 17 and nine kills, respectively. Martin set them up with 18 assists, while Escatel recorded nine digs and four aces.

The Spikers are 3-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
