STERLING – The Mendota Lady Trojans got a much-needed 41-36 victory over Sterling Newman in Three Rivers Conference action on Jan. 27 at Sterling. The MHS win completed a season two-game sweep over Newman.

After leading 7-3 at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Trojans fell behind 21-19 at the half and 32-27 after three. But Mendota had a strong fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Comets 14-4 to escape with the come-from-behind win.

“Our defense was solid early and we got some good looks, then we threw the ball all over the place in the second quarter,” said Mendota coach John Hansen. “We decided to run the offense in the fourth and attacked the rim.”

Sophomore Reanna Brant sparked the comeback as she scored eight of her team-high 14 points in the final frame. Paige Manning finished with seven points and Natalie Bodmer added six. Brant and Naitzy Garcia led the squad with eight rebounds apiece, while Katie Jenner provided six caroms and eight steals.

Both teams struggled from the free throw line with Mendota converting eight of 20 and Newman making nine of 23.
