MENDOTA – The Mendota Lady Trojans held on to edge Rock Falls, 3-2, in a Big Northern Conference varsity softball clash on May 24 at the MHS diamond.

After Rock Falls grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second, Mendota countered with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the frame. Jenna O’Donnell led off with a walk and steal of second. One batter later, Emma Schultz delivered an RBI single to tie the game. She eventually came around to score on two passed balls.

Mendota’s other run came in the third when Lauren Martin singled and made it all the way to third on an error by the Rock Falls third baseman. Martin scored on an RBI sacrifice bunt by Mary DeFore.

The only other run of the game came when Rock Falls scored once in the fifth.

DeFore was in the circle for the first five innings and got the win. She allowed eight hits, struck out four and walked one. Paige Manning got the save by holding Rock Falls hitless over the final two frames. She fanned two and walked two.

Mendota is 7-6 overall and 5-5 in league play.
