F-S Trojans get win in season finale

MENDOTA – Mendota’s freshman-sophomore football team notched its first win of the season in the season finale. The Trojans knocked off St. Bede, 25-19, on Oct. 25 at the MHS field.

Mendota, which finished with a 1-4 record, jumped out to a 12-0 first-quarter lead. Keith Grim got the scoring started with a 5-yard touchdown run at the 4:13 mark, and then Braiden Freeman raced into the end zone from 33 yards out with 1:54 remaining in the first frame.

St. Bede did the only scoring in the second period on a 24-yard touchdown pass and the Trojans took a 12-6 lead to the locker room.

St. Bede also put the only points on the board in the third quarter on a 38-yard TD pass, and the successful extra-point kick put it in front, 13-12, heading to the fourth.

The Trojans regained the lead for good in the final session when Freeman scored on runs of 62 and 26 yards. Damian Medina added an extra-point kick.

St. Bede provided the final margin with a 41-yard touchdown run with 3:07 left in the game.

Mendota churned out 312 total yards of offense compared to 251 for St. Bede. Freeman carried eight times for 150 yards, Domenic Richey had 15 attempts for 76 yards and Grim ran 16 times for 65 yards. Quarterback Justin Randolph completed two passes for 26 yards, both to Freeman.
