PORT BYRON – Mendota scored early and often, and routed Riverdale, 57-20, in a Three Rivers Conference crossover game on Sept. 3 at Port Byron.

The Trojans got on the board in every quarter, including a 27-point outburst in the third period that sealed Mendota’s second victory in as many games. Riverdale dropped to 0-2.

Mendota’s offense presented all kinds of fits for the Rams as it churned out 420 total yards and averaged 7.5 yards per play. Riverdale managed to gain 285 yards, but the Trojan defense only let the Rams in the end zone three times.

The Trojans tallied the game’s only first-quarter touchdown when Emilio Perez gathered in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Ted Landgraf with 8:21 showing on the clock. Perez kicked the extra point.

Mendota made it 14-0 at 8:23 of the second period on an Uzi Angulo 8-yard dart to the end zone. Perez’s kick split the uprights.

Three minutes later, Riverdale cut the MHS lead in half on a 6-yard TD run by Gage Hugart and a successful PAT kick, but the Trojans closed out the half with 10 straight points coming on a Damien Magallanes 19-yard touchdown scamper and a Perez 33-yard field goal with 1:19 left before intermission.

The Trojans put the finishing touches on the lopsided victory when they scored four touchdowns in the third quarter.

The passing game came back into play when the Landgraf to Perez connection struck again, this time on a 21-yard TD pass less than two minutes into the second half. Perez booted the extra-point kick.

The Rams were able to find the end zone on their next possession as Trent Doty scored on a 6-yard run, but Mendota tallied three more touchdowns before the end of the quarter to take a gigantic 51-13 lead to the fourth. Anthony Childs scored on a 9-yard run and Angulo added a 4-yard TD, while Magallanes took a Riverdale punt 46 yards to the house as time expired in the third frame. Perez added two of three PAT kicks.

Each team scored once in the fourth quarter, Mendota’s TD coming on a 26-yard run by Childs and Riverdale’s on a 63-yard run by Hugart.

Angulo rushed the ball 13 times for 147 yards, while Childs gained 88 yards in 12 carries. Landgraf completed 7 of 13 passes for 109 yards. Perez had four receptions for 46 yards and Magallanes caught two passes for 57 yards.
