Spikers blast Byron; win Princeton Tourney

The Mendota Spikers handled Byron in two sets, 25-12, 25-22, in a Big Northern Conference matchup on Oct. 8 at Byron. The Spikers evened their league mark at 3-3.

Amellia Bromenschenkel was a force at the net with 10 kills to pace Mendota’s offensive attack. She also had seven digs and two blocks. Ella Massey got the offense rolling with 14 assists and she provided five digs. Jenna O’Donnell led the Spikers with 12 digs, while Amanda Barrett collected five digs. Anna Bokus and Jaelyn Fitzgerald picked up two kills apiece.

Byron won the sophomore match 10-25, 25-17, 25-21.

Mendota’s freshmen were also beaten in three sets.

The Spikers took out four foes all in just two sets to capture first place in the Princeton Varsity Tournament on Oct. 12.

Mendota started off with a rematch of four days earlier against conference opponent Byron and the result was the same – a Spiker victory over the Tigers, 25-17, 25-10.

Fitzgerald and Bromenschenkel were disruptive at the net with seven and six kills, respectively. Massey provided 19 assists and six ace serves, while O’Donnell had five digs.

Mendota took on host Princeton in its second match and the Spikers cruised to a 25-10, 25-22 win. It was the third time Mendota has beaten Princeton this season.

Bokus and Bromenschenkel both blasted seven kills to lead the attack. Massey’s 18 assists got the offense in gear, while she also picked up 15 digs. O’Donnell chipped in with 11 digs and Bromenschenkel collected four blocks.

The Spikers dispatched Reed-Custer, 25-18, 25-20, to reach the championship match.

Fitzgerald finished off 12 kills to pace the victory, many of them set up by Massey’s 24 assists. Bromenschenkel hammered eight kills, while O’Donnell totaled 17 digs and Massey added 14 digs and three aces.

Mendota completed its perfect day with a 25-12, 25-18 triumph over Sherrard in the title match. The Spikers improved their season record to 16-9-1.

Leading the way for the Spikers were Massey (18 assists, 10 digs), O’Donnell (12 digs), Bromenschenkel (7 kills, 14 digs) and Fitzgerald (9 kills).

Massey, Bromenschenkel and Fitzgerald were all named to the all-tournament team.
