Spiker rally sinks Hall

Dixon downed the Mendota Spikers, 25-23, 25-17, in a Big Northern Conference volleyball battle on Sept. 5 at the MHS gym. The Spikers fell to 0-2 in conference action.

Abby Phalen and Jaelyn Fitzgerald led the squad with six kills apiece, while Fitzgerald posted four blocks. Also, Reiss Buettner had nine assists and four service points, Myah Boelk collected five points and eight digs, Alex Barrera had four points and nine digs, and Brittany Menzel supplied eight assists.

The Spikers staged a furious rally in the first set and then cruised in the second set to claim a 25-23, 25-17 verdict over Hall on Sept. 7 at the MHS gym.

Down 16-5 in the first set, Mendota reeled off 12 straight points to move in front and eventually post the win. All of the Spikers contributed to the winning rally, sparked by the serves of Boelk, who ended the night with 15 points from the service line.

Phalen was a huge presence at the net for the Spikers with 10 kills and two blocks. She also had five digs. Menzel led the squad with 13 assists, Buettner had nine assists and five digs, Brandy Delao recorded six digs and Peyton Baird added a pair of blocks.

Mendota dropped all four contests in the Pontiac Tournament on Sept. 9.

LaSalle-Peru rolled over the Spikers, 25-7, 25-14, in the opener. Boelk had two kills, three service points and six digs to pace the squad. Buettner and Menzel each had three assists, while Fitzgerald supplied a pair of kills.

Pontiac scored a 27-25, 25-16 triumph over Mendota. Pacing the Spikers were Boelk with five kills, Buettner with eight assists, Menzel with six points and Phalen with seven digs.

After winning the first set against Morris, 25-21, the Spikers lost the next two sets, 25-22, 15-7. Phalen posted seven kills and had six points to lead the club. Menzel topped the team with 11 assists, Buettner had six points and Boelk collected nine digs.

Mendota (3-11) met Pontiac again and the home team prevailed, 25-20, 28-26. Top performers for the Spikers were Fitzgerald (eight kills), Phalen (nine points, seven digs), Buettner (14 assists, nine points) and Barrera (seven digs).

The struggles continued for Mendota (3-12) as Princeton cruised past the Spikers, 25-17, 25-15, on Sept. 11 at the MHS gym.

Barrera had four service points and two blocks, while Phalen hammered six kills, Buettner supplied nine assists and Boelk totaled eight digs.
