STILLMAN VALLEY – Mendota took control in the second half and pulled away from Bureau Valley for a 59-34 win in the opening round of the Stillman Valley Class 2A Regional on Feb. 10.
The Lady Trojans, who beat Bureau Valley by 30 points in November, trailed 12-11 after the first quarter. But Mendota picked up the pace in the second period and took a 29-24 lead at intermission. Anna Bokus dropped in four field goals from three-point range and Daisy Arteaga added a pair of treys as they combined to score 23 of Mendota’s 29 first-half points.
The second half was all Lady Trojans as they outscored the Storm, 30-10, to win in convincing fashion.
“Our offense was clicking despite Bureau Valley doing a nice job of packing it in on us,” said Mendota coach John Hansen. “Our defense was working, but we gave up probably 14 to 16 second-chance points in the first half.”
Arteaga led the squad with 18 points, followed by Bokus with 15 and Amellia Bromenschenkel with 13. Bromenschenkel provided five rebounds, six assists and three steals. Jenna O’Donnell also picked off five boards.
Mendota’s next regional game was Tuesday night against Port Byron (Riverdale). A win would propel the Lady Trojans into the championship game at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13.
