The Mendota varsity golf team claimed victory over two Three Rivers Conference opponents on Sept. 14 at Kewanee. The Trojans fired a 167 to defeat Monmouth-Roseville (172) and Kewanee (190).

Mendota’s Owen Aughenbaugh carded a 39 to share meet medalist honors with John Jusczyk of Monmouth. Next in for the Trojans was Ethan Hanaman with a 41, followed by Dominik Stamberger with a 43 and Clay Buffington with a 44. Logan Brandner (45) and Drake Dennis (48) also competed for MHS.

Mendota fielded the only full team on the junior varsity level and had a scored of 186. Braden McPheeters had the low round at 45. Others in the lineup were Liam McGann (46), Cale Strouss (47), Jacob Ensor (48), Evan McPheeters (54) and Jace Baird (59).

LaSalle-Peru was three strokes better than the Trojans, 172-175, on Sept. 15 at the Mendota Golf Club.

Hanaman turned in the low score for Mendota with a 40. Buffington was one shot back at 41, while Brandner (46) and Aughenbaugh (48) also had their scores count toward the team tally. Dennis (53) and Stamberger (54) completed the lineup card.

L-P’s Coleman Rundle was the medalist with a 39.

Mendota was able to come away with a 181-187 victory in the junior varsity match.

McGann and Colin Rose of L-P tied for medalist honors at 42. The rest of the Mendota competitors included Ensor (44), Braden McPheeters (47), Baird (48), Evan McPheeters (54), Strouss (55), Cayden Escatel (58) and Haden Shakespeare (64).

The Trojans turned in their best match of the season with a 163, but came up one stroke short of Sherrard’s 162 on Sept. 16 at the Mendota Golf Club. Bureau Valley also competed and shot a 177.

Brandner, a senior, had the best round of his career on Senior Night with a 38 and tied a Sherrard golfer for meet medalist honors. Hanaman, also a senior, had the second-best score for the Trojans with a 40, followed by Buffington with a 41 and Stamberger with a 44. Rounding out the scorecard for Mendota was Aughenbaugh with a 47 and McGann, a senior, with a 49.

Mendota has a 14-5 overall record and an 8-4 conference mark.

The junior varsity match went to the Trojans with a 185. Sherrard totaled 187 and Bureau Valley finished at 206.

Braden McPheeters led the way for Mendota with a 45 and Dennis was next with a 46. Ensor, a senior, and Strouss both had rounds of 47, Baird carded a 48 and Evan McPheeters finished with a 51.

The Trojans finished in fourth place out of nine teams in the Princeton Invitational on Sept. 18.

Mendota had a team score of 360 to place behind Chillicothe IVC (346), Hall (350) and LaSalle-Peru (359). Behind the Trojans were Princeton (374), St. Bede (382), Bureau Valley (383), Kewanee (401) and Rock Falls (458).

Hanaman shot an 84 for the Trojans, which was good enough for fifth place overall. Other MHS competitors were Aughenbaugh (91), Stamberger (92), Buffington (93), Brandner (96) and McGann (103).

Landen Plym of Hall was the overall medalist with a 79.

The busy week for the Trojans continued when they won a triangular meet at Seneca on Sept. 20. Mendota fired a 175, one stroke better than Seneca, while Hall checked in with a 180.

Hanaman finished with the low score for Mendota at 40. He was one shot behind Hall’s Landon Plym, who was medalist. Also shooting in the 40s for the Trojans were Brandner (44), Stamberger (45) and Dennis (46). Aughenbaugh (50) and McGann (59) also competed.

Mendota (197) also posted victories over Seneca (203) and Hall (208) in the junior varsity match.

MHS’s Braden McPheeters tied a Seneca golfer for medalist with 44. The rest of the Trojan lineup included Evan McPheeters (50), Strouss (51), Escatel (52), Baird (56) and Jack Mikolasek (57).
