MHS golfers on a hot streak

The Mendota varsity golfers took down Rock Falls, 175-194, in a dual meet at Rock Falls on Sept. 10.

Grady Jones had the low score for the Trojans with a 40, which was good enough for meet medalist honors. Evan McPheeters was just one shot off the pace with a 41, while Brody Hartt and Dane Doyle each checked in with 47s. Collin Coss (52) and Esten Otero (53) completed the Mendota lineup card.

The Trojans made it a clean sweep with a 198-251 victory in the junior varsity match.

Mendota’s Alex Holland was the meet medalist with a 46. Next in for the Trojans was Kooper Novak with a 49, followed by Nick Sheridan with a 51 and Brody Kaecker with a 52. Maddox Rosales (59) and Ashtyn Stamberger (60) also competed for MHS.

Mendota battled it out with Sterling Newman and the Trojans’ score of 172 was three strokes less than the Comets on Sept. 11 at the Mendota Golf Club.

The meet came down to the wire and the Trojans were able to hold off Newman as Doyle birdied the final two holes to seal the win. He finished with a 40, which tied Newman’s Chase Decker for medalist. Hartt carded a 42 for next in line for the Trojans, followed by McPheeters and Jonas Fitzgerald both with 45s. Also in the lineup for Mendota were Coss (48) and Jones (50).

The Trojans took the top spot in a home triangular on Sept. 12. Mendota carded a 171, which was one stroke less than LaSalle-Peru. Hinckley-Big Rock finished with a 221.

All six Mendota golfers shot in the 40s, led by Jones with a 40, which turned out to be the low score among the rest of the competition. Doyle followed with a 42, while Fitzgerald had a 44, Hartt and Coss both fired 45s and McPheeters had a 46.

L-P edged out Mendota in the junior varsity event, 183-187.

Otero had the low score for the Trojans with a 42. Also competing for Mendota were Sheridan (46), Novak (49), Holland (50), Stamberger (52) and Kaecker (56).
