BETHESDA, Md. - Bonnie Jean (Lindenmier) Mathieson, 72, of Bethesda, Md., formerly of West Brooklyn, passed away suddenly on Jan. 8, 2018.

A memorial service will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Woodend Sanctuary of the Audubon Naturalist Society, 8940 Jones Mill Road, Chevy Chase, Md.

Bonnie was born May 10, 1945 in West Brooklyn to Gilbert and Dorothy Lindenmier. She was married to Donald Mathieson for 51 years.

Survivors include her husband; two children, Daniel (Jessica) and Cynthia; two grandchildren, Cash and Nathaniel Mathieson; and five siblings, Nancy (Garreth) Gusse, Linda (Terry) Brecht, Larry (Linda) Lindenmier, Tom (Angie Baugher) Lindenmier and Bill (Marjorie) Lindenmier.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Mary Jane Barrett.

A fiercely passionate, loyal and driven woman, Bonnie began her life as the oldest of seven siblings on a farm in West Brooklyn. At no point did her work ethic decline. She dedicated her life to science and research in the pursuit of helping others. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois in 1967 and her PhD from Sloan-Kettering/Cornell University Medical School in 1975. She spent 43 years working for the National Institutes of Health and had very recently retired to spend more time with her grandchildren and explore the world around her. Her contributions to the AIDS research community will be felt for decades to come. Her published works number over 125 and her awards and honors including 2003 Alumnus from Weil-Cornell Medical School, World Health Organization Review Board, and Gates Foundation Review Board, are countless. She will be remembered as a fierce warrior in the fight to develop a vaccine for AIDS and a force to be reckoned with. The world is a demonstrably better place because Bonnie Mathieson was a part of it.

In lieu of flowers, her family asks that donations in Bonnie’s name be directed to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (https://secure.pedaids.org/page/contribute/end-pediatric-aids).
