MENDOTA - Irene E. Sondgeroth, 97, of Mendota passed away Aug. 21, 2019 at Heritage Health Mendota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Peterstown with Rev. Peter Pilon officiating. Burial will follow at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. on Aug. 24 at the Schwarz Funeral Home.

Irene was born June 12, 1922 in Leonore to John and Emma (Appel) Wiesbrock. She married Leon Sondgeroth on Nov. 22, 1945. He preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 2016.

Survivors include two sons, Allen (Mary Lynn) Sondgeroth of Mendota and Leo (Lois) Sondgeroth of Sandwich; five grandchildren, Elizabeth (Steven) Woods, Douglas (Aina Gutierrez) Sondgeroth, Nathan (Jennifer) Sondgeroth, Maria (Tim) Kessler and Neil Sondgeroth; nine great-grandchildren, Garrett Woods, Gavin Woods, Brynn Woods, Ryan Sondgeroth, Avery Sondgeroth, Eva Sondgeroth, Asher Sondgeroth, Elsa Sondgeroth and Justin Kessler; and a sister-in-law, Mary Wiesbrock of Streator.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a stillborn son, Dale; two brothers, Wilfred Wiesbrock and Leroy Wiesbrock; and three sisters, Agnes Battistelli, Bernice Winner and Wilma Sondgeroth.

During her work career, Irene was the bakery manager at Classon’s Super Food for many years and then was a cafeteria worker at Northbrook Elementary School until her retirement. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul, the Ladies Altar and Rosary Society of Peterstown, LaSalle County Home Extension and the neighborhood Euchre Club. She was known for her wonderful cooking and delicious pies. She was an outstanding scrapbooker and archivist. All of her grandchildren benefitted from these talents.
