MENDOTA – One street maintenance project in Mendota has begun and several others will start in September, it was announced at the Aug. 21 regular meeting of the Mendota City Council.
Alderman Jim Fitzpatrick reported that the East Main Street project is underway. That street is closed from Meriden Street north to Peri Drive.
The First Avenue bridge project will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 5, while motor fuel tax street maintenance repairs will commence on Friday, Sept. 15.
In other action from Fitzpatrick’s report, the council approved a request to use Blackstone Park for a benefit on Saturday, Aug. 26 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
Also, Fitzpatrick said the restrooms at the Mendota Police Department are being remodeled.
In action from Alderman Randy Morris’s report, the council approved an electrician license for Jakes Electric LLC.
Alderman John Pierson said he was recently in a town in Wisconsin and it had a nice nine-hole course for disc golf. Mendota recently installed three holes of disc golf at Lake Mendota Park, and Pierson said it would be nice of Mendota could add more holes to its course in the future.
MAYOR’S REPORT
Mayor David Boelk announced a permit request was received from the Mendota Kiwanis Club to hold its annual Kiwanis Peanut Days. The council approved the request for the event, which will be Friday, Sept. 22 and Saturday, Sept. 23 at the intersection of Main and Meriden streets.
OTHER ITEMS
Some downtown Mendota business owners expressed concern to the council about an increased presence of loitering of individuals, particularly in the 700 block of Main Street. Mayor Boelk and police chief Tom Smith said police and city officials will be meeting to formulate ways of addressing the issue.
The next regular meeting of the Mendota City Council will be Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 6:30 p.m.
