TEXAS – Maj. Stanley Norman Gehler (retired), 77, of Texas, formerly of Mendota, passed away April 2, 2017.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on April 12 at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery followed by a memorial service at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Andrew Green officiating. Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. on April 11 at the Heritage Funeral Home, Harker Heights, Texas.

Stanley was born March 6, 1940 in Mendota to Gilbert and Leatha (Menz) Gehler. He married the love of his life, Sandra Walker, on May 5, 1962. She preceded him in death.

Survivors include two children, Christine Mott and retired Lt. Col. Greg (Janette) Gehler; four grandchildren, Alex Mott, Nathan Mott, Gabrielle Gehler and Jillian Gehler; one brother, Ken Gehler; and numerous other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; two brothers, Jim Gehler and Bill Gehler; and one sister, Betty Austin.

Stanley was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He graduated from Mendota High School in 1958, where he lettered in football, basketball and track. In 1963, he graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army as an armor officer. While attending college, he met the love of his life, Sandra. He proudly served with the Army for 20 years and was stationed in both Vietnam and Korea. He received numerous medals and commendations including a Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal w/ 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and Vietnam Service Medal w/ 1 Silver Service Star. After retiring from the military, he continued to serve his country by working for the director of logistics at Ft. Hood, Texas. Stan was an avid sports fan. If he was not cheering for his Aggies, he was rooting for his New York Yankees or Minnesota Vikings. He had a green thumb and was a skilled handyman who loved working on his house and lawn. Home improvement projects and gardening were his passion. At Grace Lutheran Church, he was involved in the Men’s Club and Stewardship.
