MENDOTA - Raymond P. Borowinski, 101, of Mendota, formerly of Chicago, quietly passed away Jan. 23, 2017.

Cremation rites were accorded. Interment with full military honors will be at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 W. Hoff Road, Elwood on Friday, June 16 at 11 a.m.

Raymond was a proud veteran of World War II who served in the Europe Theater with the 2nd battalion, 10th infantry regiment of the 5th division (Red Diamond). Decorations and citations he earned included Good Conduct Medal, American Theater, European Theater, with Three Bronze Stars, Bronze Star Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Army Occupation Medal, American Campaign Medal, and Combat Infantry Badge. After the war, Raymond resumed his trade as an engineering draftsman. He never married and had no children of his own but was an avid supporter of his extended family. In his retirement, he set up a family scholarship to help with the higher education of dozens of his “nieces and nephews.” Raymond was an avid reader, collector, wonderful gardener, member of the Mendota Moose Lodge and VFW and local fixture in his beloved town of Mendota. Healthy and active until the end, he will be greatly missed and never forgotten by his family and friends.
