PHOENIX, Ariz. - Retired Capt. Earl James Manning (USMC), 84, of Phoenix, Ariz., passed away Sept. 16, 2020 at the Sun West Choice Healthcare & Rehab in Sun City West, Ariz.
Viewing and funeral arrangements were handled by Regency Mortuary Funeral Home, Sun City, Ariz. Funeral services were held at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, Ariz. Sept. 23, 2020 with full military honors.
Earl “Sonny” was born in Mendota to Earl and Myrtle (Hampton) Manning on Feb. 23, 1936. He married Ellen E. Higgins on Oct. 22, 1954. She preceded him in death.
Survivors include one brother, Rick (Mary) Meyers of Mendota; a sister-in-law, Jane (Jerry) Manning; one daughter, Ellen M. (Thomas) Turner of Delray Beach Fla.; one son, Earl (Sheryl) Manning of Atlanta, Ga.; four grandchildren, Wade (Sherrie) Manning of Michigan, Earl Campbell of Arizona, Ashley (Chris) Berg of Tennessee and Cassidy (Brian) Snow of Georgia; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; two sisters, Huberta Hibbetts and Janet Thomas; and two brothers, Wayne and Jerry Manning.
Earl enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1953 and proudly served his country for over 22 years. During his service, he served in the Korean and Vietnam wars, was a drill sergeant, communication officer, infantry officer, and was a leading member of the USMC shooting team, receiving recognition as a marksman in both rifle and pistol. Earl was serving in Quantico, Va. as part of the Weapons Training Battalion Training Command when he retired from the Marine Corps on Aug. 31, 1976. He and Ellen got into hotel and apartment management, which they did for a number of years in various locations, but they enjoyed it most when they were able to get back home to Mendota where they could be around family and friends. Earl loved his wife, Ellen and enjoyed being with family, working on cars, woodworking, playing cards, going fishing, boating, and especially trips to casinos where he liked playing the slot machines. He and Ellen later moved to Arizona to be with their daughter, Ellen (Thomas) Turner and to take advantage of consistent warm weather.
