MENDOTA – Traffic control signs will go up at a Mendota intersection and several requests were approved by the Mendota City Council at its Sept. 20 regular meeting.
In Aldermanic reports, Vicki Johnson said that a traffic study was done at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Seventh Street and it was determined that yield signs are warranted northbound and southbound on Fifth Avenue at Seventh Street. The placement of yield signs was approved by the council.
Jay Miller presented a request from the proprietor of Uncle Joe’s Gaming Café to add video gaming machines that would bring the total to six at the establishment on Illinois Avenue. The measure passed the council by a 5-3 vote.
Jim Fitzpatrick reported on a request from the Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce to hold a ‘Tag Day’ on Saturday, Sept. 25 at the intersection of Main and Meriden streets. The Chamber, which is holding the event to help fund “A Mendota Christmas,” received approval from the council.
In a related item, the council also gave its permission to the Chamber to close Indiana and Illinois avenues from Washington Street to Jefferson Street and Jefferson Street from Main Street to Indiana Avenue for its “A Mendota Christmas” event. The streets will close at the end of the business day on Friday, Dec. 3 through Saturday, Dec. 4 at 4 p.m.
Fitzpatrick also informed fellow council members that vandalism has occurred in the restrooms and gazebo at Strouss Park, and that the restrooms are now closed for the season.
Mayor David Boelk opened three bids for four properties in Mendota that the city has put up for sale. A bid of $9,001.12 was submitted for 905 Sixth Ave. A bid of $2,000 was submitted for 1402 Lincoln Ave. A bid of $25,000 was turned in for 1209 & 1211 Washington St. No bid was received for property at 1107 Third Ave. The process was referred to committee for the gathering of more information before the council will act on the bids.
The next regular meeting of the Mendota City Council will be Monday, Oct. 4 at 5:30 p.m.
