MENDOTA – The Mendota City Council approved several ordinances and announced the purchase of property at its July 2 regular meeting.

In business from alderman Jim Fitzpatrick, the council approved the annual prevailing wage ordinance and made a change in the weeds and grass ordinance. In the latter ordinance, the council changed the height that weeds and grass can grow before violation from eight to six inches. The ordinance reads: Any weeds such as jimson, burdock, ragweed, thistle, cocklebur, or other weeds of a like kind, found growing in any lot or tract of land in the City are hereby declared to be a nuisance, and it shall be unlawful to permit any such weeds to grow or remain in such place. It shall be unlawful for anyone to permit any weeds not mentioned above, grass or plants, other than trees, bushes or flowers or other ornamental plants, to grow to a height exceeding six inches anywhere in the City; any such plants or weeds exceeding such height are hereby declared to be a nuisance.

Alderman John Pierson reported that a pre-annexation petition has been filed with the city by Patti Griswold. A public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 19.

Alderman Bill Hunt presented the annual appropriations ordinance for the council’s consideration. Hunt said there is approximately a 7 percent increase in the appropriations from fiscal year 2018 ($15,216,687) to fiscal year 2019 ($16,322,410). Hunt attributed the increase to the ADM flour mill facility currently under construction and police & fire pensions. The council approved the ordinance.

Also under Hunt’s business, the council approved the purchase of property at 1209 and 1211 Washington St. – the southeast corner of 13th Avenue and Washington Street. He said necessary soil work will be done and the property will be prepped for development.

Alderman Walt Weiland thanked the Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce and the city for their hard work in putting on an excellent Fourth of July celebration event on June 30 at Lake Mendota Park.

In other business, Mayor David Boelk announced the appointment of Jim Strouss as nuisance officer at a salary of $400 per month. Boelk also presented his other FY19 mayoral appointments.

The next regular meeting of the Mendota City Council will be Monday, July 16 at 6:30 p.m.
