BUREAU COUNTY - Nutrient Stewardship of Northern Illinois and its partners will hold a summer field day on Tuesday, Aug. 22. Events will take place at Indian Township, Section 36 location (1/2 mile south of Kentville Road on 1725 E Street). This farm is owned by Robert Kenney and Helen Kenney and farmed by the Todd Wright Family. The field day registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the programs will start at 9 a.m.
The day’s events start with a welcome and then continue with speakers covering subjects relating to Cover Crops and Field Pit Demo by Dan Towery with Ag Conservation Solutions; Nutrient Management/Cover Crops by Michael Ruffatti, research assistant from Illinois State University, and Erika Luft, NRCS; Cover Crop Cost Share Programs and Updates on the Local Nitrate Monitoring Project by Alan Madison and Gregg Pearson, local committee members.
Other events of the day will be cover crop plot tour, cover crop pit demonstration and strip till field demonstrations following the meeting, weather permitting.
Water testing will be available for landowners or operators who wish to test their tiles, streams or ponds for nitrates. Please be sure to collect the sample within 24 hours of the test and keep refrigerated. When collecting, measure the flow and keep tract how long it takes to fill a two- or five-gallon bucket. These results will be kept anonymous and are only for private use.
Food will be available for purchase from the Princeton FFA Alumni.
Agriculture affects everyone. The public is invited to join this up-to-date look at nutrient stewardship in today’s agriculture and how it will affect all of us in the future.
