MENDOTA - The Mendota City Council passed several ordinances and approved a pair of requests at its June 19 regular meeting.

Alderman Bill Hunt informed fellow council members that he has been in contact with the Army Corps of Engineers in hopes of landing a grant to help repair retaining walls of the Mendota creek. Several months ago, a portion of the wall behind Delao's Restaurant in downtown Mendota collapsed after a nearly six-inch rainfall. Hunt said he has been assisted by the North Central Illinois Council of Governments in this endeavor and is optimistic that the city could receive some financial assistance.

In action from Alderman Randy Morris's report, the council approved a forestry license for Might Mow.

Alderman John Holland presented several action items to the council during his report. The council approved the annual prevailing wage and appropriations ordinances, and also agreed to authorize the issuance of general obligation bonds, series 2017, in an aggregate principal amount not to exceed $700,000 for the purpose of financing public infrastructure projects and paying for costs related thereto.

During Alderman Jim Fitzpatrick's report, the council approved a request by the Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce to close a portion of Main Street one day early for set-up for the Mendota Sweet Corn Festival.

Alderman John Hessenberger presented a zoning variance request from Mary Ann Baughan, 506 Fifth St., to construct a balcony over the front of the house. The request was approved.

The next regular meeting of the Mendota City Council will be Monday, July 3 at 6:30 p.m.
