PERU - A phone scam where the caller utilizes a fake caller ID number purporting to be from Saint Bede Academy is circulating around the Illinois Valley area. St. Bede and local police warned of the scam on June 15.
Several individuals have reported receiving automated messages regarding the solicitation of a medical alert system using a fake caller ID number that claims to be St. Bede Academy. The voice in the automated message appears to be a female.
Police said the phone number associated with the calls has been altered to appear as a legitimate St. Bede Academy telephone number in a practice known as “caller ID spoofing. St. Bede Academy and local police stress that these calls are not coming from St. Bede and that residents should be wary of any call soliciting for this free medical alert system regardless of the phone number the call is made from.
Anyone who believes they may have been targeted by the scam is asked to call their local police department. More information on current telephone scams can be found at the Illinois Attorney General’s website, illinoisattorneygeneral.gov.
