MENDOTA – The Mendota City Council approved the annual tax levy and learned that two new police officers have been hired during the council’s regular meeting on Dec. 17.

Alderman John Holland presented the Fiscal Year 2019 tax levy in the amount of $1,844,750. That is a 4.7 percent increase from 2018. Holland said taxes will increase by $33.99 on a $100,000 home at fair market value and $50.99 on a $150,000 home at fair market value.

In other action from Holland’s report, the council approved a revolving loan fund request from Eugene Bodmer of ARS Auto Repair. He will be relocating his business from Sixth Street to 307 Plaza Drive in January. The loan is for $60,000 over a seven-year period at 3 percent interest. The money will be used for building improvements and other upgrades.

Bodmer, who was in attendance at the meeting, requested that he be allowed to put up two signs for his business – one on the property and one on U.S. 34 pointing down Plaza Drive to the location. The council will look into the request.

NEW OFFICERS

New police chief Greg Kellen announced that a 15-person hiring roster has been established for the Mendota Police Department and two new officers have been offered employment off of that list. They are Zachary Urbanski of Spring Valley and Lucas Kammerer of Princeton. Urbanski is a graduate of Western Illinois University and Kammerer is a graduate of Aurora University. Both are scheduled to enter the South Suburban Law Enforcement Academy at the College of DuPage on Jan. 7, 2019. The official swearing in of both officers will be held in the near future.
