MENDOTA – A new resource police officer for Mendota High School was sworn in at the May 20 meeting of the Mendota City Council.
Chad Hochstatter will begin as the resource officer at MHS beginning when the 2019-20 school year opens in August. Hochstatter has been a part-time patrolman for the Mendota Police Department.
ALDERMANIC REPORTS
Alderman John Holland presented a proposal for a cell phone stipend for city employees, which would be a $25 per month stipend for employees whose job function qualifies under established guidelines. The measure was approved with two aldermen voting no.
Also under Holland’s report, the council approved an equipment lease purchase agreement for 52 oxygen tanks for the fire department and will dispense bidding.
Alderman John Pierson presented a zoning variance request from David Abbott at 213 Ninth Ave. to allow for a canvas shelter in the driveway in front of his garage. Pierson said there are two ordinances against such shelters. Pierson recommended to deny the request and the council agreed.
The council approved two requests during alderman Jim Fitzpatrick’s report. The first was a request from OSF HealthCare Saint Paul Medical Center to use various locations, trails and streets for its annual Cornapalooza 5K/10K Run/Walk on Saturday, Aug. 10.
The second request was from Karl’s Krusaders to hold a youth obstacle course on Sunday, June 23 at Lake Mendota Park, including using the soccer fields, shelters and baseball diamonds.
OTHER ITEMS
Mayor David Boelk presented a request from the Mendota Police Department proclaiming May 20-June 2 as ‘Click It or Ticket’ Week in Mendota. The request was approved by the council.
In business from attorney Mike Guilfoyle, the council approved a resolution to sell surplus property (Tidd property) at the corner of Washington Street and 13th Avenue.
Fire chief Dennis Rutishauser said that all tornado warning sirens have been inspected and are in good working condition.
The next regular meeting of the Mendota City Council will be Monday, June 3 at 6:30 p.m.
