Trojans have mixed bag on golf courses


The Mendota varsity golf team was defeated by Hall and Princeton in a triangular meet at Spring Creek on Sept. 7. The host Red Devils recorded the low score in the round with a 160, followed by Princeton at 167 and Mendota with a 173.

Ethan Hanaman and Drake Dennis had the low rounds for the Trojans, each with 41. Next on the card was Dom Stamberger with a 44, Clay Buffington with a 47, Liam McGann at 49 and Logan Brandner at 52.

Josh Scheri of Hall and Jaden Eggers of Princeton shared meet medalist honors with 38s.

Mendota claimed the junior varsity match with a 181. Princeton took second at 193 and Hall posted a 219.

Owen Aughenbaugh led the Trojans to victory with a low round score of 38. Cale Strouss checked in next for Mendota with a 46, followed by Braden McPheeters at 48, Evan McPheeters and Jace Baird both with 49s, and Jacob Ensor with a 51.


The Trojans got back on the winning track with a triangular win over St. Bede and Morrison on Sept. 8 at Spring Creek. Mendota and St. Bede tied with a team score of 175, but the Trojans claimed first place by having the lower score for the fifth-place golfer.

Hanaman paced the Trojans with a 42, while Buffington and Dennis both had 44s. Aughenbaugh (45), Stamberger (47) and Brandner (50) completed the MHS lineup.

St. Bede’s Brendan Pillion had the low score for the round with a 39.

Mendota’s junior varsity squad shot a 187 to easily defeat St. Bede’s 219.

Braden McPheeters was the medalist with a 44. Also competing for the Trojans were McGann (46), Ensor (47), Strouss (50), Evan McPheeters (55) and Baird (56).


Mendota took care of Rochelle and Amboy in a triangular meet at Rochelle on Sept. 9. The Trojans shot a 176 to best Amboy by six strokes, while the host school finished third with a 203.

All six MHS golfers ended with scores in the 40s, led by Hanaman with a 42. Dennis was next with a 44, while Brandner and Buffington finished their rounds with 45s. Stamberger (47) and Aughenbaugh (49) were also on the card for MHS.

Griffin Ohlinger of Rochelle was the medalist with a 41.

The junior varsity match went to Mendota over Amboy, 191-230.

Ensor and Baird tied for medalist honors with 46s. Strouss was next for the Trojans with a 48, followed by Braden McPheeters (51), Evan McPheeters (52) and Jack Mikolasek (52).
