Trojans beat Erie-P. in football opener

MENDOTA – So far, the transition from the Big Northern Conference to the Three Rivers Conference can be deemed a success for the Mendota Trojans. Granted, it’s still early in the process – as early as you can get – but putting a mark in the win column is something the Trojans will cherish after many years of anguish in the Big Northern.

In its very first game in the Three Rivers, Mendota did just enough in every aspect of the game to post a 24-14 victory over Erie-Prophetstown in a cross-over game on Aug. 27 at the MHS field. Although both teams are in the Three Rivers, the game was a non-conference cross-over with Mendota being in the Mississippi Division and E-P in the Rock Division.

The Trojans put points on the board in a variety of ways as the offense, defense and special teams all held up their end of the bargain. The offense churned out 221 yards in the contest, including a big 77-yard touchdown drive late in the game to secure the victory. The defense held Erie-Prophetstown to a meager 130 yards and came away with several key interceptions, while special teams came up big in the punting game and kicked a big field goal in the second half when the game was still tight.
