Strong 4th quarter lifts Trojan sophs

A strong fourth quarter propelled the Mendota sophomore boys’ basketball team to a 46-35 win at Oregon on Feb. 24.

The Trojans held a 29-25 halftime lead and were up by just one (34-33) heading to the fourth frame. In that final period, Mendota outscored the home team, 12-2, to secure the victory. The Trojans nailed three shots from beyond the three-point arc in the fourth.

Cale Strouss hit two of those three-pointers in the fourth quarter and had five in the game to lead Mendota in scoring with 15 points. Izaiah Nanez drained a pair of treys and finished with 11 points.

Mendota kept it close with Stillman Valley for one quarter, but then the home team pulled away for a 54-29 triumph over the Trojans on March 1 at Stillman Valley.

The Cardinals were on top 16-12 at the conclusion of the opening stanza, but Mendota’s offense went cold the rest of the contest. The Trojans trailed 28-19 at the half and then did not score in the third quarter and were behind 45-19 entering the fourth.

Landon Kreiser paced Mendota scorers with nine points. Nanez, Jose Rocha and Johnathan Cortez added five points apiece.
