The Mendota sophomore boys’ basketball team posted its third straight victory with a 47-42 verdict over St. Bede in a Three Rivers Conference game on Feb. 15 at Peru.

Both teams had trouble gaining the upper hand as the Trojans led by a single point after the first quarter (12-11) and at the half (16-15). St. Bede was able to rally for a 32-30 advantage with three quarters gone before Mendota outscored the home team, 17-10, in the final frame to pull out the win.

Owen Aughenbaugh pumped in 10 points (eight in the second half) to lead the Trojan offense, while Mason Koch added nine markers. Cale Strouss and Jace Baird helped out with six points apiece.

Mendota concluded the season with a 44-29 league loss to Hall on Feb. 16 at the MHS gym. The Trojans finished with an 11-17 overall record and a 5-7 league mark.

Hall connected on three shots from three-point range in the first quarter to help it grab a 12-4 lead after the opening stanza. Mendota trailed 23-11 at the half and 30-20 after three periods.

Strouss drained five three-pointers and finished with 17 points, all in the second half, to pace the Trojans. Baird chipped in with six tallies.
