MHS starts soccer season with a bang

MENDOTA – What looked to be a promising season has certainly started out that way for the Mendota varsity boys’ soccer team as it has won its first two games by a 21-0 margin.

The Trojan kicked off the spring 2021 campaign with an 11-0 triumph over Winnebago in Big Northern Conference action on March 18 at the MHS field.

Johnathan Cortez led the attack with three goals and an assist. Other goal-scorers included Jose Ruiz, Edgar Arteaga, Jasiel Watson, Yahir Diaz, Izaiah Nanez, Luis Garcia and Ricky Orozco.

Also picking up assists were Diaz (three), Orozco and Josue Arteaga.

Many Trejo was between the pipes for the Trojans and had three saves.

Mendota overpowered LaSalle-Peru, 10-0, on the home turf on March 20.

Watson sparked the victory with four goals. Three of them came in the first nine minutes of the game. Diaz provided two goals and four assists, while the defense got involved in the attack as Josue Arteaga punched in a pair of goals and Rafa Romero recorded one. Ricky Orozco and Nanez tallied the other goals for the Trojans.

Assists went to Ruiz (two), Romero, Edgar Arteaga and Josue Arteaga.

Trejo pitched another shutout in goal with one save.

Mendota claimed a 6-0 victory in the junior varsity game.

Eli Arjes rammed home a pair of goals, while Iker Landeros, Jesus Orozco, Isaac Guzman and Nanez added one goal apiece.
