MENDOTA – Byron’s varsity golfers gave Mendota all it could handle, but the Trojans pulled out a two-shot victory, 182-184, on Sept. 4 at the Mendota Golf Club.
Zeke Hessenberger led the attack for Mendota with a sizzling 39 to earn meet medalist honors. Next on the scoresheet for the Trojans was Taylor Joyce with a 45, followed by Ethan Hanaman with a 46. Rounding out the card for Mendota were Logan Brandner with a 52, Jack Beetz with a 53 and Liam McGann with a 59.
Mendota and Byron tied at 214 in junior varsity competition. The Trojans earned the team win by having a lower score by one stroke in the fifth golfer slot.
Luke Ross posted the low score for Mendota with a 50. Noah DeLong was one shot back with a 51, while Mateo Escatel (56) and Shea Doughty (57) also shot in the 50s. Completing the Mendota lineup were Kody Becket (64) and Kevin Lewis (68).
Mendota’s freshman-sophomore golfers competed against each other as Purple and Gold teams.
The Purple team won with a 230. Competitors were Clayton Buffington (49) Owen Ossman (56), Braden McPheeters (59), Landon Kreiser (66), Cayden Escatel (67) and Jack Mikolasek (71).
The Gold team finished with a 258. In the lineup were Drake Dennis (61), Juan Delao (63), Dominik Stamberger (66), Lewis (68), Ian Murphy (70) and Dylan Denault (71).
