Mendota golfers starts season with 3 wins

The Mendota Trojan golf team opened the season on a successful note with a victory over Princeton and Putnam County on Aug. 16 at Wyaton Hills in Princeton.

Mendota finished the round with a 176 to edge the host Tigers by three strokes. Putnam County checked in with a 200.

Ethan Hanaman led the way for the Trojans with a 39, which was good enough for meet medalist honors. The rest of the Mendota lineup was bunched together in their final tallies. Logan Brandner and Clay Buffington each carded a 45, followed by Dominik Stamberger with a 47, and Owen Aughenbaugh and Liam McGann both with 48s.

Mendota also was victorious in the junior varsity match as the Trojans shot a 198 compared to a 215 for Princeton and a 248 for Putnam County.

MHS’s Braden McPheeters shot a 46 to tie a Princeton golfer for medalist honors. Also competing for the Trojans were Drake Dennis (48), Cale Strouss (51), Jack Mikolasek (53), Jacob Ensor (53) and Evan McPheeters (58).

Mendota’s varsity squad hosted Sandwich in its home opener on Aug. 17 and the Trojans came away with a 177-196 triumph.

Hanaman was the medalist with a 42. Brandner was close behind with a 43, followed by McGann at 45 and Buffington at 47. Braden McPheeters (54) and Stamberger (58) rounded out the MHS lineup.
