Mendota City Council adopts FY21 tax levy

Homeowners should see reduction for city portion of tax bill

MENDOTA – The Mendota City Council adopted its tax levy and renewed insurance premiums during a special meeting held telephonically on Dec. 16.

Alderman John Holland, serving as mayor pro-tem, presented the Fiscal Year 2020 annual audit, and said the city received an unmodified opinion by the auditing firm, which means it was a good report. The FY20 audit has been placed on file.

The council adopted the Fiscal Year 2021 annual tax levy. The total levy request is $1,974,761, which is a 2.3 percent increase from FY20. However, mainly because of TIF VI sun-setting, the assessed valuation increased and therefore the city’s overall tax rate will decrease. So, homeowners should see a decrease in the city’s portion of their tax bill next year.

The council approved renewals for risk management and worker’s compensation insurance, as well as health, vision and dental insurance. The risk management and worker’s compensation premium increased 16 percent from last year, while the health, vision and dental premium had a slight 1.4 percent increase.

Full-time city employees were each awarded a Christmas bonus of $50 in the form of Mendota Bucks.
