Lady Trojans top Oregon for second win of season

MENDOTA – The Mendota Lady Trojans put together their best offensive game of the season and downed Oregon, 56-47, on Feb. 24 at the MHS gym.

Mendota had been struggling to score 26 points in an entire game, but it did that in one half against Oregon. The two teams were tied at 26-all at the break thanks to a 10-0 run by the Lady Hawks to end the half.

The third quarter proved to be the difference when the Lady Trojans pulled away with 14 points in the frame compared to just five for Oregon.

“Aside from a three-minute turnover-fest that led to a 10-0 Oregon run to end the second, we played nearly a perfect game on offense,” said Mendota coach John Hansen. “This was a nice team win.”

Daisy Arteaga pumped in 21 points, with 15 coming in the second half, to lead the Mendota offense. Jenna O’Donnell was next with 15 points, including a big three-pointer late in the game, while Izabella Nanez chipped in with 12 points and paced the team with 13 rebounds. O’Donnell, Nanez and Arteaga each had three steals.

Stillman Valley raced out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and never looked back in posting a 58-25 verdict over the Lady Trojans on March 1 at the MHS gym.

The Cardinals connected on three shots from three-point land in the first period and built up a 21-10 lead at the conclusion. They added two more treys in the second quarter while Mendota scored just two points in the frame and trailed 39-12 at intermission.

“You have to give credit to Stillman Valley on this one,” said Hansen. “They shot the ball extremely well and we didn’t. They’re a really good offensive team and we had trouble slowing them down.”

Stillman Valley outscored Mendota, 14-9, in the third quarter to move in front by over 30 points, which kicked in the running clock.

Arteaga and Jaelyn Fitzgerald had eight points apiece to lead Mendota (2-8). Paige Manning grabbed six rebounds to top that category, while O’Donnell had three assists and three steals.
