The Mendota Lady Trojans returned to the basketball court after a 10-day layoff due to COVID-related issues, but still minus eight varsity players and four starters. The result was a 56-29 loss to Kewanee in a Three Rivers Conference contest on Jan. 12 at the MHS gym.

Kewanee drilled three of its six three-pointers in the first quarter and zoomed out to an 18-8 lead at the end of eight minutes. The count was 33-11 at halftime and 45-20 heading to the fourth.

“I honestly really thought we held our own against a good Kewanee team,” said Mendota coach John Hansen. “I loved the fight and effort, and actually saw a lot of things I loved. Even a lot of our mistakes were trying to do the right thing.”

Reanna Brant dropped in 18 of Mendota’s 29 points and she also led the squad with 13 rebounds. Isabella Tolentino provided seven points and three steals, while Natalie Bodmer collected six rebounds.

Mendota fell to 1-4 in Three Rivers Conference play.

A tight game after one quarter slipped away from Mendota in a 54-23 loss at Newark on Jan. 13.

The home team held just a 12-10 lead after the first period, but the Lady Trojans hit a cold spell in the second quarter and scored just three points compared to 14 for Newark. Mendota was then outscored, 28-10, in the second half.

“It was nice to get some girls back, but we were a little off at just about everything we did,” noted Hansen.

Brant, Natalie Bodmer and Naitzy Garcia led Mendota with six points apiece. Brant and Garcia also topped the team with six rebounds apiece.

Mendota (2-15) fell behind 19-9 after the first quarter and then was only able to score 13 points over the final three frames, including being shutout in the fourth.

“We played better in the first half than the final,” said Hansen. “We didn’t play so well in the second half.

Brant and Katie Jenner led the scoring with six points apiece. Brant also led with five rebounds.
