MENDOTA – A great blue heron waits patiently near the shoreline of Lake Mendota for a potential meal while a gaggle of geese enjoys a swim on a recent sun-filled summer day. Great blue herons are expert fishers. They snare their aquatic prey by walking slowly, or standing still for long periods of time and waiting for fish to come within range of their long necks and blade-like bills.
