City Council approves increase in Mendota's sewer rates

MENDOTA – The sewer rate in Mendota will be going up, it was announced at the March 7 meeting of the Mendota City Council.

Alderman Jim Fitzpatrick explained that in anticipation of capital improvements needed at the city sewer plant, the rates will be increasing for city residents. Effective April 1 to show up on the May bill, the monthly rate will go from $11 to $14 and the per 100 cubic feet rate will rise from $4.30 to $5.80.

In other action from Fitzpatrick, the city approved its annual resolution with the Illinois Department of Transportation for street detours during the Sweet Corn Festival in August.

Also, Fitzpatrick announced that opening day for the city incinerator-burn pit will be Saturday, April 2. The burn pit will be open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day during the season.

Alderman John Hessenberger said the zoning board of appeals met March 3 to consider variance requests from Dollar General for a new store to be built on U.S. 34 at Lori Lane on the east side of Mendota. The following requests were approved: decrease the number of parking spaces from 63 to 50; decrease the number of loading spaces from two to one; allow a 10-foot setback along the west side of the property.

Alderman John Holland said the first round of budget meetings have been completed and more will be scheduled.

Alderman Jay Miller presented an ordinance in regard to liquor license fees. The council approved a fee of $550 for bars/restaurants. The council also approved amending the municipal code to allow for entertainment at establishments with the event to be completed before midnight.

OTHER ITEMS

Mayor David Boelk presented two proclamations, recognizing April as “Fair Housing Month” and recognizing April 7 as “Junior Achievement Day.”

Police Chief Greg Kellen presented his end-of-year report to the mayor and council members. He also said that three cadets will complete their power tests for entrance into the police academy, with a March 28 target date for their first day at the academy.

The next regular meeting of the Mendota City Council will be Monday, March 21 at 5:30 p.m.
